Why and Where Is Letra Paraguay Moving?

Letra Paraguay is a non-profit organisation which is dedicated to translating the Bible into the minority languages of Paraguay and accompanying the ethnic groups through the process. Currently the Bible is being translated into three languages: Ache, Toba Maskoy, and Paraguayan Sign Language. A fourth project is about to begin, and we are praying for the Ache missionary family which will begin the translation into Guarani Ñandeva.

Letra’s main office is currently in Naranjal, a town in Alto Paraná, which is an hour and a half away from Ciudad del Este, and is very close to two Ache communities. One is Puerto Barra, 20 kilometres away, and the other is Ypetimi, which is 65 kilometres away. Many times members of the Ache community have stayed in Letra’s guest house, as have groups of volunteers from many different countries, including Argentina, China, the USA, Brazil, Uruguay, the UK, Germany, Peru and Chile.

But the office is a lot further away from the new projects. The Pinto family, working with the Toba Maskoy translation project, lives in the Chaco, while the LSPY team which is translating the Bible into sign language is based in Asunción.

The move to Asunción won’t mean the Ache project is ending, nor will it mean that the Ache translation of the Bible is ready. The New Testament has been translated, but the project continues. The other four Ache communities (Cerro Morotï, Kuentuwy, Chupa Pou and Arroya Bandera) are closer to Asunción, and visits to the Chaco will be more frequent, to accompany the Pinto family and the work among the Toba Maskoy in Loma Plata. Victor will also be close at hand for the beginning of the Ñandeva project, which is located in Laguna Negra, 50 kilometres from Filadelfia, and of course Letra Paraguay will also be closer to the sign language project, which is based in Asunción itself.

Other reasons for moving include the large distances which currently have to be covered to get to Asunción and further aboard, for the trips that are a necessary part of Victor’s work in the Wycliffe Global Alliance, as well as Rocío’s studies in Asunción.

In summary, the work continues. Moreover, it’s growing and advancing, with new undertakings in the Heavenly Kingdom. We thank you for your prayers, and may God guide these new stages of the Bible translation project, to reach Letra’s objective: the Bible for all, in this generation!
